National Housing Maintenance Forum

Setting the standard for maintaining assets

Workshop 4b - Wednesday 11:30

Asbestos Management

Asbestos is responsible for the largest number of work related deaths in the UK. Asbestos legislation exists to protect all persons who may be exposed to asbestos, and since 2002 has placed a requirement for duty holders of non-domestic premises to manage any asbestos materials present within them. It is now recognised that the groups of workers most at risk are involved in maintenance and construction.

It is estimated that there are 1.5million “non-domestic” premises. It is thought that the number of duty holders actively “managing” asbestos is low. Whilst a large, high profile company has recently been prosecuted for failing to manage, the likelihood is that there are many organisations that are ignorant of their duties. This session discusses what’s needed and the consequences of failing to comply.
