Jane Talbot

Barrister, St Ives Chambers

Jane has specialised in representing social housing providers since 2001, first as a solicitor-advocate and then as a barrister (since 2016). She has a high profile in the sector having been the chair of the Law Society's Housing Committee and, in that role, gave evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee on the  Anti Social Behaviour Crime and Policing (then Bill) proposals and to the Welsh Assembly on the Renting Homes Bill. 

Jane has particular expertise in cases involving capacity, discrimination, Equality Act 2010, Public Law and Human Rights challenges. Jane led on the Court of Appeal case of Knowsley Housing Trust v McMullen (2004) and sat on a panel drafting the guidance to the Equality Act 2010.  Jane has also been involved in cases in the Court of Protection where best interests decisions have been made in relation to a tenant's occupation, often in the context of a hoarder with complex care needs. 

She has been ranked in both Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for many years, a quote in the 2023 guide is: "Jane is a well-polished advocate with a manner which is well liked by clients. She is able to consider creative solutions to complex problems and understands the inner workings of social housing providers inside out."
