The Dutch social housing sector is the largest in Europe covering 32% of the housing market. Currently the sector is at risk because of a series of scandals, a lack of societal support and the agreement that was recently presented by the new government. This agreement suggests that housing associations should have a limited social task and be led by local governments. Moreover, it presents a new rent regulation system and a levy on housing associations that puts housing associations at financial risk and investments and maintenance under pressure. The presentation will explain the current situation, explore the challenges for social housing in the future and suggest joint lessons for the UK and the Netherlands.
