2D Affordable Water for Affordable Housing

Saving water is viewed as the poor relation compared with the need to save energy in affordable housing. With much of the South East of England and London officially being designated as a water stressed area more needs to be done to improve water efficiency and demand management. Compulsory water metering is increasingly being rolled out in many regions and will result in larger families especially facing significantly increased utility bills for the supply and disposal of water. The average household metered water bill is already over £400 per annum and is set to increase in the coming years. The opportunity to save energy through saving water first is invariably overlooked. Paul Ciniglio and Neil Sephton from First Wessex will talk about their experience and the action they are taking locally, where compulsory metering has recently been introduced, to help provide customers with ‘affordable water’. They will discuss a range of free and cost effective water saving fittings and products that can be supplied to residents and the all important advice that can be given to residents to help them save money and conserve water resources. First Wessex is currently working in partnership with Southern Water to install grey water recycling in 10 homes (with optional waste water heat recovery) and details of this innovative pilot project will be covered as a case study.
