‘Closed’ coach tour of the HPC construction site with a guide. This is a nuclear licensed site and as such the delegates will not be able to disembark the coach whilst on the tour. The tour is informative however and gives a very good impression of the project.
We will be on site during the week EDF are scheduled to achieve a highly significant milestone: the completion of the platform or foundation for the Unit 1 nuclear island, after which the construction of the first nuclear island itself starts. This is a £19bn construction project to build a pair of EPR nuclear plants that will produce 6% of the UK’s electricity needs.
The site covers approximately 400 acres, surrounded by a 6.2 km boundary fence. To date, 5.2 million m3 of material has been moved with about 4,000 operatives on site daily. The world’s largest capacity crane is currently being assembled at site and work is about to start on boring 9km of tunnel under the Bristol Channel.
