Transforming Homes: Retrofitting 1.4 Million Homes

From 1920s semi-detached properties to Victorian terraces, 1.4 million homes built by councils across England and Wales need a transformation. The challenge is significant, but so is the opportunity.

The Transforming Homes Consortium is leading the way. This AHRC-funded Green Transition Ecosystem brings together universities, councils, community groups and residents to co-design practical retrofit solutions.

The vision is clear: use biobased materials, reduce energy demand, lower bills and improve health and wellbeing. Demonstration projects in Swansea and Bristol are already showing what's possible.

The NHMF Net Zero Working Group is partnering to bring these real-world learnings into best practice across the sector. One of our leads, Julian Ransom sits on the Steering Group, with regular knowledge exchange and joint events planned.

If you're involved in social housing, maintenance or sustainable building, this partnership matters to you. Real evidence. Real homes. Real impact.
